Practical Bicycle Maintenance

By Jane Jameson

A bicycle can become your pride and joy. At every opportunity, you could find yourself tinkering with the mechanics to ensure that everything is in perfect shape. Everyone will understand that there are few things more annoying than a rattling handlebar or a pedal that doesn't feel quite right. As such, you should do your upmost to carry out regular bicycle maintenance, no matter how basic it might be.

One of the most basic maintenance procedures that should be carried out regularly is to ensure that tyres are inflated correctly. Over a period of time, air will be lost from the inner tube, causing them to become flat. This has several consequences, the first being that cycling becomes more difficult. This is because the surface area of the tyre increases, meaning that the friction is increased. In addition, if you ride over any obstacles, your wheel will be prone to baring the impact, which could cause the whole thing to bend or become impaired.

There are a huge number of moving parts on all types of bicycle. Many of these parts are made of metals of some description and will experience friction with each other during the whole cycling mechanism. Applying a special lubricant prevents damage to these components. Spinning parts such as wheels and pedals contain bearings and to keep them in prime working condition, they will require regular lubrication.

As you'd expect, cycling can be a mucky activity, particularly mountain biking when most of the time is spent off-road. A build up of dirt can cause damage to these components if it manages to work its way into the nooks and crannies. To avoid any damage, you should clean your bike regularly, before there is chance for any real build up of dirt to occur. Use hot, soapy water and rinse off using a hose. Don't use have the hose set to high pressure as water could be forced into components, causing them to break.

Regular maintenance checks are an absolute must. Before every journey, you should check that everything is in perfect working order. All nuts and bolts should be tightened properly and you should make sure that your light work properly.
