ISPAK Alleges PTCL of Illegally Using Extra Frequency

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 01:46 AM PST

ISPAK Alleges PTCL of Illegally Using Extra Frequency is a post from: ProPakistani

Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan has raised its concern over illegal use of frequency by PTCL.

In a letter written to Frequency Allocation Board, ISPAK has said that PTCL is illegally using extra frequency for its 9.3 Mbps wireless internet service called Nitro.

ISPAK noted that PTCL was allocated frequency band of 1975-1980 MHz and 1895-1900 MHz for use of its CDMA/WLL services. However, company is now using 1975-1981.875 and 1895-1901.875 MHz thus occupying extra 3.75 MHz of band not originally allocated to them.

ISPAK has urged FAB to charge PTCL pro-rated charges for this extra usage and serious action for the violation.

It merits mentioning here that frequency of 3.75 MHz for major cities of Pakistan is worth millions of dollars, meaning that PTCL is possibly causing millions of loss to PTA, FAB and the government if company is proven guilty.

A query sent to PTCL for their viewpoint on this is still awaiting response.

Following is the copy of ISPAK's said letter:

Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan

(ISPAK)

No. 3(5)/2010

aa10 December 2010

Executive Director

Frequency Allocation Board

Government of Pakistan

Islamabad

Subject:          Illegal use of frequency by PTCL

Dear Sir,

PTCL was allocated frequency band of 1975-1980 MHz and 1895-1900 MHz for use of its CDMA/WLL services. Currently PTCL is using this frequency for its broadband services advertised as EVO Nitro. But in reality, PTCL is using 1975-1981.875 and 1895-1901.875 MHz thus occupying extra 3.75 MHz of band not originally allocated to them. PTCL is using this extra band in major cities of the country including Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Lahore and Karachi, as verified by us through field monitoring.

2.         Extra use of wireless spectrum is not only illegal but also deprives Government from millions of dollars revenue earned on auction of wireless spectrum to telecom operators.

3          We therefore request that punitive action be kindly undertaken against PTCL for illegal use of wireless spectrum under relevant clauses of Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organisation) Act, 1996 and PTCL should be billed for the spectrum charges based on the pro-rata charges of spectrum fee at previous auctioned prices for each telecom region.

With kind regards.

Yours truly,

Wahaj us Siraj

Convener

Telenor Opposes Vimplecom/Orascom Deal is a post from: ProPakistani

Telenor has long expressed its concerns over the expected Vimplecom/Orascom transaction, however, today the group has formally communicated its reservations to VimpelCom Ltd.’s Chairman.

Telenor, in an email, noted that it has determined that the proposed acquisition by VimpelCom Ltd. of Weather Investments S.p.A. is not in the best interests of VimpelCom shareholders and therefore does not intend to support the transaction.

“We strongly support VimpelCom’s expansion in accordance with the principles agreed at the time the company was created.

However, in our capacity as a shareholder of VimpelCom Ltd., we do not believe this transaction makes strategic or financial sense for VimpelCom’s shareholders,” said Telenor spokesman Dag Melgaard.

Telenor ASA holds a 36% voting and 39.6% economic interest in VimpelCom Ltd.

Earlier, VimpleCom had offered USD 6.8 billion, to Naguib Sawiris to get hold of controlling stakes in Orascom Telecom. An MoU in this regard was signed in October. Transaction was scheduled to be completed by February 2011.

Financial Insight of Pakistan Cellular Industry – 2010 is a post from: ProPakistani

Pakistan's Cellular industry faced tough fiscal year 2009-2010. Hiked pricing, lower buying power, power crisis, currency devaluation and price war remained major strikers for the cellular companies in year 2009-2010.

Objective of this report is to analyze the industry's growth & performance of individual players. Companies may benchmark their next year's strategy on the basis of Network KPIs given in Section 4 of this report.

1. Revenues

In comparison to 17% revenue growth in FYE 2009, overall industry revenue growth slowed down to 11% in FYE 2010.

Revenues thumb Financial Insight of Pakistan Cellular Industry 2010

Following graph shows the contribution of individual cellular players in the revenue growth. During FYE 2010, 39% of increased industry revenue was picked by Ufone, followed by 32% by Telenor & 15% by Zong.

Warid & Mobilink's share in the increased industry revenue remained less than average industry growth rate of 11%.

4. Network Utilization KPIs

Industry Revenue/avg. cell site dropped from PKR 8.6m in FYE 2009 to PKR 8.1m in FYE 2010. Following table shows that Mobilink topped network utilization in terms of revenue generation with PKR 10.7m per site, followed by Ufone & Telenor at PKR 9.3m per site.

5. Conclusion:

Industry's growth is slowing down over the period of time, which means that new subscribers' addition is reducing and future competition will be focused more towards launch of innovative products/services to increase revenue streams.

Subscribers' retention & acquisition of subscribers is already on the top of to-do lists, along-with, customer support is going to play pivotal role in coming days.

How to Make Your Own Time Capsule and Backup With Time Machine for Cheap

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 04:38 AM PST

The best way to backup your data on a Mac is to use Apple's Time Machine software. It's simple to use, and already built into OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard. However, many people believe that to use Time Machine, you have to have an Apple Time Capsule, which makes sense.

Apple brands all of their products very intelligently. However, you can make your own Time Capsule for under $100, which will work just as good as a more expensive Apple Time Capsule.

Things you need:

  • An internal hard drive (laptop or desktop).

and

  • An external hard drive enclosure (2.5 for laptop hard drives, 3.5 for desktop hard drives).

or

  • Any external hard drive.

*If you have an extra laptop hard drive laying around (maybe from an old computer), you can save yourself approximately $60.*

*External hard drive enclosures are dirt cheap. You can get one for under $15, shipping included.*

Assembling your homemade Time Capsule

- Open your external hard drive enclosure. Every hard drive enclosure works a bit different. The majority of them open up by unscrewing a couple of screws on one end.

- Slide in the internal hard drive.

- Close the external enclosure.

If you are using an external hard drive, such as a Western Digital Passport, you don't need to do anything.

Format your external hard drive

Plug your external hard drive into an available USB slot on your Mac. OS X will automatically detect it. Open up Disk Utility using the path: Finder > Applications > Utilities Disk Utility.

Select your external hard drive from the left-hand side drives list. Click the Erase tab. Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from the Format: drop down. Click the Erase button to erase and format your drive.

Setting up Time Machine

Open up Time Machine preferences using the path Finder > Applications > System Preferences > Time Machine. Click the Select Disk… button. Select your external hard drive from the drop down menu and click Use for Backup.

That's all there is to backing up your data on a Mac. Time Machine will now backup to the external hard drive that you created. By default, Time Machine backs up your data every hour. This is not really necessary.

Go ahead and slide the slider to the OFF position within the Time Machine preferences window. That way, Time Machine will only backup data when you decide to. Also, make sure to check the option for Show Time Machine status in the menu bar.

To create a new updated backup, click the Time Machine icon (next to the clock) on the desktop, and select Back Up Now from the drop down menu.

Wireless Backups

If you want the ability to backup your Mac without having to connect your external hard drive, you can do wireless backups. For wireless backups, you will need a router that has the ability to use external hard drives (has a USB port on the back of it). If you don't have one, you can get them for around $40.

router Each brand of router works slightly different. For the most part, all you need to do is plug-in your external hard drive to an available USB port on the router. Make sure that it is formatted as OS X Journaled. From there, your Mac should automatically detect it. Set it up using the Time Machine preferences Finder > Applications > System Preferences > Time Machine.

Turn Your Laptop, Netbook, or Desktop into an eBook Reader

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 03:17 AM PST

So maybe Amazon Kindles and iPads are not your thing. However, you do take your laptop with you to school, work, when traveling, etc. If you're looking to get some reading time in, you can easily turn your laptop, netbook, or desktop into a great eBook reader. The process is very easy and can add a sweet interface to your reading collection, rather than a bunch of PDF files and Adobe Reader.

laptop ebook reader

Step 1 – Get some eBook software

Adobe Reader is a great application for viewing PDF files quickly and easily. However, it doesn’t offer the best interface for organizing several items, such as an eBook collection. You can get the true eBook reader experience on your PC by adding some specialty eBook software.

There are four main eBook reading apps that should do the job nicely: Barnes and Nobles eBook Reader, Amazon Kindle for PC, Calibre, and Mobipocket Reader Desktop. They are all great, free applications that offer their own level of uniqueness and user interface.

mobipocket

Mobipocket Reader Desktop offers the best customization options and slickest layout. It kind of looks like an "iTunes for eBooks." But for this tutorial, we will be demonstrating the Amazon Kindle for PC, as it uses a unique format for eBooks and is the simplest to use.

You can download Amazon Kindle for PC here. Upon download, launch the installer and install Amazon Kindle for PC onto your computer. If you already have an Amazon account, and have purchased eBooks before, you can register Kindle for PC and import the books that you got off of Amazon.

Step 2 – Launch software and collect eBooks

After you have Kindle for PC installed and ready to go, go ahead and double click the Kindle for PC icon to get started. Upon startup, you will notice that Kindle for PC has a very simple interface. There are basically two screens to choose from: Home and Archived Items. You will also notice that there are no eBooks in there yet. Thus, you need to add some.

kindle for PC

Navigate to the path Start > Documents > My Kindle Content. This folder is where all of your eBooks for Kindle for PC are stored. If you have any MOBI formatted eBooks on your computer, go ahead and drag them into this folder and relaunch Kindle for PC. Upon doing so, the eBooks should immediately appear in your Home library.

Step 3 – Reading eBooks

You should now be good to go with reading books. Double click your eBook to open it up. Use the arrow keys to flip to different pages. Also note, you can use the View button to change the font size.

You can also jump to specific chapters and locations using the Go To button. Finally, the Bookmark button simply saves your spot in the book so that you can resume reading at a later time.

Step 4 – Converting PDF eBooks

One problem with using the Kindle for PC software is that it requires MOBI eBooks. It won't read PDFs. Even if you try dragging a PDF eBook into the My Kindle Content folder, it still will not show up in the Home library screen.

However, you can download the application Auto Kindle which will convert any PDF to MOBI. From there, you can read them using Kindle for PC, or transfer them to an actual Kindle if you own one.
