Groupin.PK is Launching – First Up Sugar Deal for Rs. 25 Per KG is a post from: ProPakistani

SugarRs.25perKg Groupin.PK is Launching First Up Sugar Deal for Rs. 25 Per KGAlmost a month ago, we had uncovered this start-up Groupin.PK that promises discounted deals and coupons for its customers from local market.

Now we are told that Groupin.PK is launching its operation tomorrow (in Islamabad for now) and as a promotion company is offering sugar at Rs. 25 per kilogram.

As we mentioned in our last coverage, the idea behind Groupin.PK is that they offer (from a minimum of 50% up to 90%) discounts coupons to their subscribers.

This discount is made possible only when a minimum number of people sign up for that deal, lets say, 100 people. This way, all 100 people will enjoy the discount, while the seller/vendor can enjoy the bulk sale.

In the case of Sugar, we are amazed at the discount rate, I mean they are offering even lesser than the factory cost. When we asked if Groupin is subsidizing the sugar as a launch promotion, the Marketing Head of the start-up opted not to disclose the trade secret.

Groupin is likely to start its operations in Lahore and Karachi in a month's duration.

Also to mention here, there is a cap of 5 KG per account for this sugar discount, meaning that, one account holder will not be able to buy more than 5 kilo grams of sugar.

Also remember this that deals won't stay on Groupin.PK for ever. Usually deals are going to say valid for 24 hours or so. Though, old deals (the popular ones) may come back again, based on the demand and seller's will.

The official website of Pakistan Software Export Board is down for three days now, with a note on it saying that site is being updated and it will be back soon.

PSEB PSEB Has Almost Lost Its Website, For Ever!

However, a source in PSEB who requested not to be named told ProPakistani that PSEB lost its website due to non-payment of its hosting bills. He further told us that PSEB is likely to lose all its data as hosting service provider has terminated the account on account of non-payment of hosting dues.

We have learned that PSEB has shifted its website to a new server for time being, however, the old data is yet to be recovered from old host, which won't be possible unless PSEB clears its outstanding dues.

Previously PSEB was hosted with Server4Sale, however it never paid for the hosting services, told us Server4Sale representative in Pakistan. Hosting company confirmed ProPakistani that PSEB account was suspended after un-acknowledged multiple notices.

When asked from PSEB, a official denied to comment on hosting/payment issues, however, he said that website will get back online till tomorrow evening.

We have heard unofficially that PSEB may develop a new website design/content to get it back online, at earliest.

PSEB is said to be the responsible body for promoting IT industry in the country and then taking those locally developed products and services abroad to get them exported.

No Life For Fresh Grads!

Posted: 03 Apr 2011 10:15 PM PDT

No Life For Fresh Grads! is a post from: ProPakistani

home careers 300x170 No Life For Fresh Grads! The imbalance between our academic institutions and industry is growing stark with passing time. Much has been written and said about it; both sides claim to be vigorous and honest in taking measures to safeguard the young minds that leave their universities with ambitious plans and resolute determinations.

For some reasons, however, nothing substantial has risen to surface. In terms of number of graduate students, universities have long gone crossed the threshold that industry can accommodate. In any eco-system where entrepreneurship is alienated in talks (and behaviors) of high profile intellectuals, such a scenario only becomes embitter for the economic future of that country.

A high official from Aircom Pakistan comments on this matter "we do want to hire youngsters with no or little experience so that we can mould them our way. But for the past few years, we have been experiencing that those with 5 to 6 years of experience apply for low level jobs and because of the joblessness in the market, they accept packages that are not meant for their skillset. Such experiences have warmed us the wrong way. Management now seeks to fit veterans (at low cost) and save themselves from training and grooming freshers."

Huawei's Senior Account Manager said on behalf of the world's second biggest vendor that Huawei is not hiring fresh graduates anywhere in Pakistan these days. There are vacancies, no doubt, but those are for middle level experienced people. (I hold my reservations on this comment as I know a few of my young fellows being accepted and embraced in the Chinese giant)

If you would swim across any local job portal, you would figure it out easily that there are openings for engineers with 2 to 3 years of experience on relevant equipment. Mobilink South currently has openings in Optimization department but they don't want to hire youngsters too.

In an article I wrote last month, which was later removed from the website it was published at, I talked about how telecom companies try being at the forefront of all youth driven activities end up hiring relatives of Governors in place of potential and transparent fresh applicants. However, in such cases you cannot blame the internal administration too.

Note: Names of the respective officials of Aircom and Huawei have been blotted out on account of anonymity.

Government to Devolve HEC

Posted: 03 Apr 2011 09:59 PM PDT

Government to Devolve HEC is a post from: ProPakistani

Federal government is considering dissolving Higher Education Commission and transfer its powers to provinces after the 18th amendment. While the government is seeking a cover and just to escape from fake degree issues, Academicians of the country see it as a step back ward rather forward for the Higher education in the country.

According to the Express Tribune report, Vice chancellors of 36 universities along with Chairman HEC met Raza Rabbani and stressed him to not to take this decision of dissolving the HEC as provinces do not have required capacity and funding for whole process.

Dr. Javed Laghari in his briefing to Parliamentary commission for implementation of 18th amendment said Provinces and universities have a strong and forceful voice in HEC. He said "There are plentiful participation and decision makers in the development and implementation of all plans for the promotion of higher education in the country. Therefore [there is no need to devolve the HEC]."

According to The News report on April 2nd "Government's this step to dissolve the HEC will cost it $550 million dollars. USAID has given an indication to halt its grants to HEC after this step by our government", the News report claimed.

World Bank has also told the higher officials of HEC to wait for the 300 million dollar loan as HEC future is not clear. World Bank had recently promised 300 million dollar loan on easy pay back conditions for HEC for its next five years operations.

Dr. Atta ur Rehman, HEC chairman from 2003 to 2008 who laid the foundation for reforming higher education sector in the country is also against this move of Federal government. In his statement he has said "Handling responsibility to the provinces would undo the achievements of recent years, which saw a huge expansion in the university sector, provided for with federal funds".

HEC for the very first time in Pakistan history enabled poor and bright young people to go abroad for higher studies on scholarships thus making them focus all their attentions on studies rather than making them first earn for their fee and daily expenses.

HEC is also credited for an achievement for the first time Pakistan that three universities were ranked in world top 500 universities of the world.

HEC is bearing the brunt of Parliamentarians as it has termed 50 legislators degrees fake and about 200 of them as suspicious. The legislators are also not cooperating with HEC even after the clear orders of Supreme Court.

Government has applied various tactics to stop HEC declaring legislator's degrees fake or dubious. One such move of the government was to arrest the HEC chairman Javed Laghari brother 'Frooq Laghari' in July 2010 to pressurize the chairman. Farooq Laghari was released after 10 days in custody following Javed Laghari meeting with the Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani.

We can argue about the performance of HEC in past 9 years but there is not doubt about HEC's great work done for promoting higher education in Pakistan and instead of giving more powers and grants to improve its capacity it is being dissolved.

While world is praising the performance of HEC our own legislators are bound on its destruction by giving it to provinces which lack the infrastructure, funds and man power.

Having said all this, final decision has not yet been taken and past record of this government reflects that it is not impossible to make government change its mind as we have seen several times amid mounting media and political pressure government retreat. So it is once again the time to build pressure on government through media to change its mind bound to dissolve the HEC.
