PTA is Aggressive to Rectify Cellular Users’ Database by May 17th is a post from: ProPakistani

PTA PHOTO 300x200 PTA is Aggressive to Rectify Cellular Users Database by May 17thChairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Dr. Mohammad Yaseen has said that unregistered SIMs will be blocked by 17th May 2011 and SIMs verification process through "668 Information System" is in full swing.

PTA had earlier issued orders to cellular companies to ban all unverified SIMs by 17th of May.

Chairman PTA has once again stressed on the issue, while he was talking at Connect ICT Forum 2011 at Karachi Expo Centre organized in concurrence with the 6th edition of Information & Communication Technology Exhibition- Connect 2011 today.  IT & telecom industry experts, academia and media men also attended the Forum.

Mobile operators connect with their registered subscribers by calls and SMSes to get their SIM verified with their respective CNICs in this regard. Also, hundreds of subscribers inquire about their connection through PTA website as it is receiving daily 400,000 hits now a days.

Yaseen ruled out that any contraction of subscribers will take place as a result of regulatory campaign, claiming that all subscribers are genuine and there will be no decrease of subscribers base and no loss to mobile operators consequently.

This is phase-3 of our campaign because the authority could not clean all data at once, there must be IT solution of registration of SIM and rectification of data and PTA along with operators have done it in the past and blocked 16.3 million SIMs without name, PTA chairman said.

He said the PTA is chalking out to provide IMEI numbers to handset importers, however, authority will act according to the policy to be framed by the ministry and government.

PTA has submitted its input to IT Ministry in which we have suggested two point policy. First, to impose ban on these handsets at Customs stage where IMEI numbers are not mentioned, and second, impose a ban on the sale of such phones in local markets, he said.

Mobile Tele-density has increased to 66.8% percent with 5% annual growth because of efforts to advance telecommunication sector through liberalized policies he added. Broadband is considered as the next big thing to offer a unifying services platform for three converging industrial sectors: computing, communications and broadcasting.

Encouraging developments are happening in this sector since mid-2007, Pakistan has emerged as a lucrative market for broadband service providers owing to the huge potential it offers especially in the wireless broadband market.

We observed a profound evolution of broadband technologies over the years with the present subscription base reaching 1.2 million from 0.1 million in 2007.

Chairman PTA also highlighted the statistics regarding broadband market. He said that Broad Band Market of Asia is expected to reach 605 billion USD by 2011; the global BOP market for ICT is $30.5 billion; the amount of mobile payment transaction is expected to reach 300 Billion USD by 2013.

He said that government and private sector need to work together to foster a new culture. We at PTA will continue to provide the necessary support to Industry and the other stakeholders.

The pace of technological advancement is accelerating and ICT is increasingly becoming a ubiquitous and intrinsic part of people's behaviors and social networks as well as of business practices,  government activities and service provision. We expect transformations 2.0 to continue to move human progress forward by further leveraging ICT's positive social, political, and economic impact on governments, enterprise, and civil society alike, he further added.

SCME–NUST Prepares Cheap Alternative to Diesel

Posted: 03 May 2011 10:00 PM PDT

SCME–NUST Prepares Cheap Alternative to Diesel is a post from: ProPakistani

04 SCME–NUST Prepares Cheap Alternative to DieselThe economic condition in the country is growing worse steadily and the fuel section is no exception. It seems like there is a price hike every other week that pushes prices to ever new heights.

One can get the magnitude of our dependence on foreign oil from the fact that our oil imports are expected to reach 6.5 billion dollars this year.

Tackling this issue head-on, the SCME (School of Chemical and Mechanical Engineering) school of NUST (National University of Engineering and Technology) has unveiled biodiesel made from the Jatropha plant.

Oil is extracted from the Jatropha plant seeds and processed to get the biodiesel. Here’s what makes this particular biodiesel special:

  • The Jatropha plant is cultivable practically anywhere.
  • One acre of Jatropha plant farms is sufficient to make 2000 liters of biodiesel.
  • The biodiesel is clean burning and the process inherently removes a lot of impurities.

The price to make a liter of biodiesel is Rs. 25. Compare that to the current prices and one can realize the importance as well as the potential of this breakthrough. As for the fuel standing the test of real world use, most generators and vehicles in NUST are already running on the biodiesel with no issues at all.

As well as pioneering this practically implementable technology, NUST has maintained a model farm that covers an area of 15 acres for Jatropha cultivation. Keeping in mind the enormous potential of this project, half a million Jatropha trees have already been planted with plans to plant 4-5 million trees this year.

Projects like these show that there is no lack of talent in our country and there are people who can tackle the very issues our country is facing right now.

If the potential of this breakthrough is fully utilized by the government (through large scale production), it could result in a significant decrease in our oil import bill as well as give our people a relief from the rising fuel prices.

The ball is in the government's court now. Let's see how they deal with it.

Beware! Osama’s Death Video on Facebook is a Scam

Posted: 03 May 2011 09:51 PM PDT

Beware! Osama’s Death Video on Facebook is a Scam is a post from: ProPakistani

Soon after the death news of Osama Bin Laden went online, black sheep started to find their way out of the scenario to use the situation.

And they succeeded once again. Since people were already excited as well as sentimental enough about the news and wanted to see something from inside, and here the trick worked.

“Osama Death Video” and “Osama execution Video” were the search term used to trap the poor victims.  The scam mainly worked on facebook, showing the picture of dead Osama with a link to the video.

Following are two examples taken from facebook.

osama death video scam Beware! Osamas Death Video on Facebook is a Scam

osama death video scam2 Beware! Osamas Death Video on Facebook is a Scam

When you click on the link, it redirects you to some other page asking for the human verification by solving out the simple mathematical question. But that is also a fake verification since you cannot enter any value to the text field provided.

Everyone who shares this news gets a victim and auto messages are sent to their entire friend list.

Possible Harms:

  • This fake page could be coded to steal cookies from your browser leaving you with the password theft
  • Can harm your computer with virus
  • Can leave a bot-net in your computer which may be used by the attacker later
  • Your personal information, friend list, emails has been dispatched to the attacker. He/She/They may use it as per their will now (most probably for spamming)

It is better to take some necessary measures to be safe than to be in wrong hands. Let you friends and those people  know about the issue who are insanely sharing this and other in the same category and ask them not to share any link before verification.

Moreover if you are one of those who have already clicked it, take the following precautions to be safe:

  • Clear your browser cache and all stored password
  • Get your computer scanned with some good anti-virus
  • Better change your important passwords if they were saved in your browser

Oracle Eyes Business Opportunities in Mobile Banking Sector

Posted: 03 May 2011 09:50 PM PDT

Oracle Eyes Business Opportunities in Mobile Banking Sector is a post from: ProPakistani

The booming mobile-banking industry has not only provided business platform to local and multinational banks and mobile phone operators in Pakistan but it also opened a window of opportunity to software application developers to play their part for financial transactions in the emerging industry.

Oracle seems to be planning its role in developing mobile-banking industry in Pakistan as it comes up with its cutting-edge technology to offer comprehensive financial solutions to banks and cellular operators.

Farhan Ibrahim Chaudhry, Country Director-Technology Business, expressed his views about mobile-banking in Pakistan and its future in coming years. Here is the excerpt of his interview.

Pakistan has tremendous potential in mobile-banking and mobile-commerce sectors to explore huge untapped population of customers in the urban and rural areas with their innovative, facilitative and secure services and products.

Banking and cellular operators have drawn huge market for their businesses through mobile-commerce and in a phase of designing different features for their services and products at present but they can be successful with speedy, secure and intelligence applications in their systems and networks.

The branchless banking is being developed to tap a large un-banked population in urban and rural areas and various solutions are in testing phase by mobile phone operators and banks to deploy uninterrupted and secure transactions.

The number of account holders and subscribers are increasing day by day through mobile-banking in Pakistan with lot of different channels for transactions supported by solid regulations of State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

Mobile-banking sector demand high data storage and speedy transaction whether for utility payments or money transfers within country or international remittance.

There is a huge potential in Pakistan for adopting Oracle products, particularly to make the mobile-banking platforms the most reliable, secure, fast and efficient fast.

Oracle's Exadata Database Machine have enabled companies and provided a highly efficient data warehouse with online transactions processing applications and intelligent system in one box, making it the ideal platform for consolidating onto grids or private clouds.

Banks and telecom operators will not be required to set up separate machines for their data warehousing and OLTP needs as we provide both solutions in one pre-configured machine, hence reducing the cost of operations and improve the efficiency of business.

Oracle Exadata is the only solution in the world with intelligent data storage, columnar compression and online transactions processing capabilities. The system provides hybrid columnar compression which decreases the cost of storage 10 times to 50 times.

The storage server is designed intelligently to store the frequently used data in in-built flash which makes the data-fetching process faster.

Oracle Exadata Database Machine uses InfiniBand technology for network communication which has enhanced the bandwidth to 40 GB per second which is more than 5 times faster than competing machines.

Oracle makes available the latest technologies in Pakistan at the time of their launch in other parts of the world and we have special arrangement for developing market to accommodate their needs of multiple solutions for multiple usages.

I see a potential for Exadata Database Machine in Pakistani market because we believe the country is a progressing economy and developing nation and the need for data storage and processing will only increase with the passage of time.
