Setup AutoSave in OpenOffice

Posted: 12 Mar 2011 03:40 AM PST

No one wants to accidentally lose all their work while creating a document. Nothing is worse than a sudden shut down when you've forgotten to press Save. Unless you have AutoSave enabled, program glitches, operating system issues or closing the wrong program can all cause you to lose your precious documents and all the time you've spent creating them. Luckily, OpenOffice lets you not only enable AutoSave, but customize your settings to save as often as you need.

Enable AutoSave

Open either OpenOffice Writer or OpenOffice Calc. You can access the AutoSave options from either program. Go to the Tools menu and select Options.

Options

Select the Load/Save category and select General.

Load Save

Under the Save section on the right pane, check the box labeled Save AutoRecovery information every. Use the box to the right of the option to choose how often you want to save AutoRecovery information.

The default time is 15 minutes. If you deal with important documents, you may want to set the time to 5 minutes or less. This will prevent the loss of most of your data should something happen to close the document unexpectedly.

AutoRecovery

Press OK to save your settings.

Opening Saved Documents

As soon as you can restart OpenOffice after the program crashes, do so. When you open the program you were last working with, you'll be given the option to save the AutoRecovery draft. Save this draft immediately as your new document.

If you do not save the document, you will not be given a second chance to save the draft. If you are not given the option to save your drafts when you first start OpenOffice again, there are two locations to check for your saved drafts.

Open OpenOffice and go to Tools. Select Options. Expand the OpenOffice.org section and select Paths. Note the locations of the Backups and Temporary Files directories.

Paths

Navigate to the Backups directory first using Windows Explorer. Access Windows Explorer by going to Start and selecting Computer or My Computer. If you do not see a recent draft in that directory, check the Temporary Files directory. Either location can be used to store your drafts.

Never disable the AutoRecovery option. Doing so will prevent any drafts from being saved should something happen unexpectedly. Recovering the majority of your work is much better than having to start from scratch. Even if you manually save often, AutoRecovery is still a useful backup method to use.

Top 3 Coupon, Promo and Deal Websites To Save You Money On Your Next Purchase

Sure you purchase items online once in a while (or often), but how often do you enter a promo or coupon code into the text box during checkout? Much easier to use than traditional cut-out coupons, online coupons are a simple matter of copy and paste.

From there, instant savings can be anywhere from 5% to 50% off. Not only that, but online coupons can be used for digital assets as well, rather than just physical goods. For example, a good promo code could get you 50% off of your next domain purchase.

Here are 3 of the web's best coupon websites to date.

RetailMeNot.com

RetailMeNot

RetailMeNot is arguably the best coupon website out there. Although the website started as a basic discount and savings board, it has expanded into a "mini" social network with many community features.

Even more notably, RetailMeNot has a savings tracker/calculator, which allows members to track and total their combined savings throughout their online purchase history. RetailMeNot is probably the best website for finding specific coupons and codes quickly.

Groupon.com

Groupon

As mentioned above, RetailMeNot is a very good website for finding specific coupons and codes quickly. Meaning, that if you are doing some online shopping at a popular store, such as Macys, RetailMeNot will likely have a decent coupon code for you to paste in at checkout; after you have your shopping done.

Groupon is a bit different, because instead of being a database of several coupons to popular websites, it aims for local appeal and targets local shopping. Groupon works by e-mailing and tracking coupon codes which are specific to your local.

For example, say you live in Miami, Florida. Groupon would give you Miami exclusive coupons which can be used at local retailers and outlets. If you are a bargain hunter, and love to buy things for the simple fact that they are a good deal, definitely give Groupon a try.

fatwallet.com

fatwallet

Fatwallet.com is a top notch coupon and savings website that often has great discounts on electronics. However, they offer a variety of different categories as well. As far as selection and features, fatwallet is up there with RetailMeNot; but, fatwallet's website is designed a bit differently. Fatwallet is designed to be more of a savings website, where RetailMeNot is designed in more of a blog style.

Coupon websites are quickly starting to become popular, and of course, there are many other great coupon websites out there. If you have not yet used online promo codes and coupons, be sure to bookmark these three websites. Next time you make an online purchase, you just may save a couple of bucks.
