Get Updates for All Microsoft Products using Windows Update

Windows Update has been around for a long time and pretty much everyone knows that it's an automated feature of Windows that downloads service packs, driver updates, security patches, etc for your operating system.

Earlier, you had to visit the Microsoft Update site to download all the updates for your computer. In the last few years, the update feature has been fully integrated into Windows and it runs as a service.

Normally, Windows Update downloads updates for just your operating system (Windows XP, Vista, 7, etc). That's fine, but if you have a PC, you probably have other Microsoft products installed on your computer.

For example, if you are running Microsoft Office, OneNote, Front Page, MS Accounting, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Publisher, Virutal PC, InfoPath, etc. All of these programs are Microsoft programs and in order to update them with the latest service packs, you have to manually do it!

Luckily, there is a feature of Windows Update that allows you to download updates for all Microsoft products! This will keep your software up-to-date and save you the hassle of searching and installing updates on your own.

To enable this feature, open the Control Panel and click on Windows Update.

Next, when the Windows Update dialog pops up, you can check what the current setting is by looking at the text next to "You Receive Updates:". For me, it was set to Windows only and that is the default.

Now click on the link that says Find out more directly underneath.

update windows 7

This will launch your web browser and load up Windows Update. You have to agree to some terms first and then download an update.

Click Install and then you may have to restart your computer. Once you have restarted, go back to Windows Update and it should now look like this:

configure windows update

As you can see, it now says "For Windows and other products from Microsoft Update". That's it! Now you will receive updates for all Microsoft products including Office. Enjoy!
