When the body cools down to lower than acceptable core temperature levels--frostbite can occur. Frostbite is damage to the outer skin layer and the underlying tissue. It does not happen instantly; it generally occurs when skin is exposed to very cold temperatures over a long period of time. However, there isn't any set time exposure or lowering of the body temperature to gauge by.
