Tips For Home Remodeling

By Michelle Johnson

There comes a time for most homeowners when they get tired of their current dcor, or need to make repairs that should've been done long ago. Or perhaps it's both. If remodeling a room in your home is in your near future, there are a few guidelines you can follow.

The first thing you should start with is a plan. Begin by creating a realistic plan that includes a schedule of every task you plan to undertake. Since you are improving the house, comfort should be one of your first considerations. If a certain room needs more time budgeted to it, make sure there is a room in your house that you can use as a substitute while doing renovations. For instance, if you are remodeling the kitchen, make sure you can cook and eat elsewhere during the remodel.

Next, you should determine where to start. If the project is a total remodel, you should start with the flooring because it's a base for everything else. For example, the color of the flooring or carpet that you choose should be the basis for the rest of the design decisions and theme of the room.

As for renovating small rooms, there are certain colors to consider. Warm colors like red should be avoided, as this type of colors will make a small room seem even smaller. Also it would give an awkward theme on the room. Since bright colors make a room seem more spacious, go for colors like light blue and light green. Usually, shades of white and cream look great with colorful accents. Light colors are applicable for the ceiling. You can use large patterns in accessories like pillows and throws, but use smaller patterns for wallpaper and furniture.

If you'd like to keep the remodel under a certain budget, consider checking your materials on thrift stores or second-hand stores. Canvass your furnishings to plan a range of budget for each. Also try places like Ikea and Target, as they offer a variety of furniture options for a fairly inexpensive rate.

If you're not a seasoned remodeling expert, it is advised that you consult friends and relatives who have had work done relatively recently and ask their recommendations. You'll also find many great ideas online - and, you can find recommendations for a great contractor if you'd like to spend the money on one. Yelp and Google can give samples and recommendation of who's best for your project, with the right keyword. If you don't have the budget for it, recruit some crafty friends who can help you create the home of your dreams.
