PTA Committee Formed to Look into Mobilink’s Outage Posted: 08 Mar 2011 03:30 AM PST PTA Committee Formed to Look into Mobilink’s Outage is a post from: ProPakistani Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has formed a Committee headed by Member (Technical) PTA, Dr. Khawar Siddique Khokhar to analyze situation that arose after Mobilink's outage on Sunday. This was mentioned in a statement issued by the authority. Statement said that DG (Enforcement), DG (Licensing) and DG (Law) at PTA are also part of this committee that is likely to prepare a report based on facts gathered during their visit to Mobilink's office to formulate a way for better crisis management during any such events in future. Mobilink's in-house investigation on incident will also be made part of this report. The Committee is deliberating further action on the issue from all technical and legal aspects and how such incidents can be prevented in future, said the statement. According to Daily Times, Mobilink's outage was also discussed in senate's standing committee meeting for IT and Telecom. Paper said that committee has directed the regulator to take action against the company by imposing fine and/or arranging compensation for the customers. We are not sure of any possible fine imposition on Mobilink, however, after our conversations with multiple PTA officials, it looks that Mobilink may end up paying something to each customer as a compensation – but again, there's nothing decided so far at authority's headquarter, its something that's just on the PTA's cards for now. After this incident, and other relating fire eruptions in past, PTA is looking into its options to make sure that this doesn't happen again. For this, according to our sources, authority may regulate to make it necessary for all operators to maintain backups of all core-infrastructure equipment, also termed as disaster recovery setup. Pakistani USF is One of the Best Implemented USF Model, Globally: SAMENA Posted: 07 Mar 2011 11:41 PM PST Pakistani USF is One of the Best Implemented USF Model, Globally: SAMENA is a post from: ProPakistani SAMENA Telecommunications Council has announced that Universal Service Fund Company (USF) of Pakistan has become the world's foremost USF institutions to join its multi-regional membership of operators, technology companies, regulatory authorities, and government institutions, said a statement we got from SAMENA just moments ago. USF, established by the government of Pakistan to expand basic telephony and broadband connectivity to impoverished and under-served areas, and ranked globally among a handful of most successful and exemplary implementations of the universal service fund, has been at the forefront of bridging the digital divide within Pakistan since 2007. Credited globally for operating transparently and effectively, USF has represented Pakistan as a model country in terms of telecommunications growth, public-private sector collaboration, and effective implementation of both government policies and advanced technologies to bring connectivity to the common man. In a market of 170 million inhabitants and where GSM coverage exceeds 80%, USF has been achieving its targets of financing the expansion of telecommunications services in collaboration with and by being solely reliant on private sector telecommunications operators' financial contributions. Such telecommunications services include basic telephony, broadband internet, optical fiber networks establishment, and community tele-centers. Over the years, apart from rural telecoms projects in un-served "lots", USF has also been focusing on proliferating broadband in un-served second and third-tier towns and cities. In the mean time, USF has also proceeded towards establishing fiber-optic "motorways" to the unserved sub-district administrative divisions in each of the four provinces of Pakistan. Furthermore, USF, with a goal to establishing multi-purpose community tele-centers all over Pakistan, is now in the process of starting citizen-centric services in the rural areas of the country, thus propelling the use of information and communication technology tools and e-services. Recently, USF has been emphatic on the implementation of alternative energy solutions to expand telecommunications services in Pakistan. Parvez Iftikhar, USF's chief executive officer, feels that
Considering USF to be a major player in Pakistan's public and private sectors, SAMENA's chief executive officer and executive manager director, Tom Wilson, said that
SAMENA Telecommunications Council's membership platform, since its creation in April 2006, has been active in voicing and communicating information on telecoms and pertinent regulatory challenges. USF Pakistan is the 82th member to join SAMENA. Related posts:

Microsoft BizSpark Camp Promotes new Entrepreneurs Posted: 07 Mar 2011 11:32 PM PST Microsoft BizSpark Camp Promotes new Entrepreneurs is a post from: ProPakistani Microsoft Pakistan recently organized two BizSpark Camps at Microsoft Innovation Center where 9 technology products, developed by 6 startup companies, were showcased. This was the first initiative of its kind where the ideas of young entrepreneurs were actually transformed into a mature product. The first camp was based on Windows Phone 7 Development and the second one was on Windows Azure Development. The projects were diversified from a game to live score updates. There were also solutions related to e-banking, e-commerce and personal security. The showcasing event was attended by 80 professionals including developers, IT pros, bloggers and students, and executives from Microsoft, P@SHA and TiE. The main highlight of the event was the deployment of projects on Multi Touch Screens where the attendees could actually witness the applications in real time. Sharing his views on the program Kamal Ahmed, Country General Manager Microsoft said:
Also present during the event were Shoaib Khalil, Marketing Manager, Microsoft Pakistan; and Zafar ul Islam, Enterprise Technology Strategist. BizSpark Camp is a subset of Microsoft's BizSpark Program launched last year. For many technology startup companies, achieving and sustaining business success is a tough proposition. Many succumb to myriad challenges along the way — from funding to marketing to changing market conditions. Looking at these concerns, Microsoft Pakistan, in partnership with Pakistan Software Houses Association for IT & ITES (P@SHA), The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) and Tech Angels Network (TAN), launched Microsoft BizSpark program. This program is targeted towards early stage software companies, providing them with resources including access to Microsoft platform software and development tools with no upfront cost. Microsoft BizSpark Camps were held to enhance the technical skill set of the startup companies, based on emerging technologies and latest trends, and also to provide mentoring through local industry experts.
