Telecom operators seem cautious to tighten their belts for Capital Expenditures (Capex) and Operational Expenditures (Opex) in Pakistan as Foreign Director Investment (FDI) has continued to drop by 39 percent in the first half of the current fiscal year 2010-11 (1HFY11).

State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) statistics showed that companies in telecom sector landed 111.2 million FDI in the country in 1HFY11 as compared with capital of 181.7 million recorded in the corresponding period of last fiscal year.

Telecom operators particularly in the cellular sector had announced to invest big amounts in the beginning of 2010 but they have failed to materialize it so far, apparently because their expenses were restricted outside the country.

Mobilink and Zong managements had announced in April of last year to invest US $250 million and US $300 million respectively in 2010 to expand their infrastructure and service quality in operating country.

The country received US $111.2 million FDI in telecom sector by 2010-end. The FDI landed by telecom operators was recorded US $ 108.6 million in April to June 2010.

SBP quarterly report mentioned that major inflows of FDI recorded at US$ 60 million in September 2010 by single mobile telephony company.

Besides Qubee a broadband operator invested US $ 35 million in an estimate.

The major part of this investment was made on the revamping and repair work of infrastructure damaged by floods in July and August last year. More than 3104 BTS sites of cellular operators' were damaged as reported by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

SBP report said that telecom operators witnessed US $ 16.8 million negative reinvestment of their earnings during July-Nov 2010, which shows losses to some operators in the sector.

The cellular operators – Mobilink, Telenor and Ufone – have also contributed to Rs 238.5 million to the flood relief funds.

Repatriation of dividends

The telecom operators have sent US $ 51.8 million to their homelands in 1HFY11 as profit or dividends, SBP reported.

The profits repatriation showed 10.7 percent growth in the closing half of current fiscal year as it were reported 46.8 million previously in the period of Jul-Dec of 2009.

A nostalgic trip down Pakistan's cellular industry will show how far we have travelled in a short frame of time. Anyone remember the late 90s; the bulky handsets that very few people could afford or even bother to carry. Landline was still king and communication was limited to the occasional phone call of only a few minutes (the expensive calls rates and the circular dialer played their roles).

The turn of the century brought the boom of the internet, and with it came this hunger for knowing everything that was happening everywhere, as well as being connected with our dears and not-so dears at all times of day.

Then entered GSM technology, and the local market became a zoo for SIMs; the lines, the black market of trade, and the unfortunate losses of lives. Of course, stability was reached in some context after a while, and at the end of the recent decade, Pakistan has 100 million cellular subscribers.

With this announcement by the PTA, analysts have been quick to undertake two exercises; the first is to understand the correct number of subscribers that actually exist, and the second to evaluate the potential of the market.

For the cellular companies, the current tactics provide an established revenue stream; voice usage is still high among mobile subscribers. However, competition in recent years has been tough and the price war that is at the forefront is unlikely to remain a viable option for any of the players.

Businesses in every industry sectors, barring a few niche segments, have realized that long-term planning requires understanding all aspects of consumer requirements, as well as generating a need within the market for new platforms.

The cellular companies in Pakistan have yet to step away from the primary dimension of mobile service provision; many attribute this to the amateur user market that exists and the lack of need expressed by consumers. However, what has been witnessed across several emerging economies is that as options enter the market, so does the increase in consumer needs.

Take 3G for example. The technology which is a decade old remains a debatable topic among the entire industry. For the companies, justifying the costs of implementation by market demand has made it unfeasible project. Many in the market would also state that very few consumers would use it. Quite true, but then so is DSL and WiMAX and GPRS. Even these technologies are used by few and far between; the number however has been growing exponentially in recent years.

Cellular companies in the developed and emerging world have already begun to divest from their primary activity to other vertically aligned functions, in a bid to bring a complete communication solution to the subscriber.

In the US, AT&T has landline, cellular and internet products available for the consumer. It is now pushing a cable TV service called U-verse, in an aim for ensuring that it can make the one subscriber into a revenue earner through four streams. Similar approaches can be seen in many other nations across the world.

Even on the local front, PTCL and Micronet took leaps towards diversification of services in the last few years. Both offer landline, internet and cable TV services to subscribers, and continue to seek further expansion into the segments. However, the cellular companies have yet to make the same push. Even on the solution front, no company has actively pursued bringing mobility to the age-old functions of the business enterprises in the country.

Analysts have long-stated that the local cellular market in need of synergies; as stagnation creeps in, revenue growth will slow. Recent financial results of all the companies have shown this. While cellular penetration still continues into the rural segment, the time is now for the corporate entities to look into cross-platform partnerships that can bring a diversified portfolio to the consumer and keep the industry at par with the international norms.

Microsoft has been recognized as the most significant corporate donor to the Pakistan Flood Disaster with a contribution of over $ 5 million. Microsoft was accorded the recognition along with Coca Cola, GE and P&G as the four most significant corporate donors.

Microsoft's contribution included over $ 900,000 in cash endowment and over $ 3.8 million in software donations to leading disaster relief organizations, $ 900,000 in kind for Eagle Disaster Management Response Software Package and $220,000 in Grants from Community Affairs Division to support the Punjab Youth Council volunteer program.

Country Manager Kamal Ahmed led the Microsoft mission earlier this year in a presentation to the Punjab Chief Minister and subsequently his cabinet, to present a state-of–the-art Emergency Response System worth $ 500,000 developed by Microsoft Gold Partner, Geodan.

The Response System and its technical staff installed and trained Provincial Govt. relief workers for disaster management. Microsoft also arranged demos for the software system for all the major donors so that it can become a part of the arsenal of disaster response mechanisms. In addition, Microsoft provided software donations and computer systems to the NGOs involved in the relief effort.

Talking about the flood relief effort, Kamal Ahmed said,

"The floods have uprooted millions from their homes. Hundreds of thousands are still in need of our support. Every individual, every brand, every company must do everything possible to help the affectees in areas best suited to their core strengths. Only in this way will we be able to maximize our impact and attend to the needs of our fellow Pakistanis."

Mr. David Wright, Country Head of Save the Children US, while appreciating the multi-faceted support provided by Microsoft, said,

"Although there is still an immense need for relief efforts in the far-flung areas, we must appreciate that we have several months of unwavering support from the corporate sector. Since winter is reaching its peak, I would urge the government and the corporate sector to come forward with generous donations so that maximum relief could be provided to the millions of displaced families."

The United Nations has reported that to date, an estimated 14 million people have been affected by torrential rains and floods and 6 to 7 million people are in dire need of food aid, clean water and shelter. Over 1,400 lives have been lost, more than 1,600 injured and 2 to 3 million people displaced due to the various rain-related hazards, including landslides, floods, mudflows and structural collapse.

Get up when it sounds:

Get up as soon as you hear the wake-up alarm instead of letting it consume your battery.

Do not Let it Ring for long:

When you get a call answer it as soon as possible so that it rings for lesser time. When busy keep it on silent to prevent it from ringing that long. Try not to keep long duration ringtones and sms tunes. Keep them on a beep or similar.

Keep the Talk short:

This might sound odd and totally absurd, but try talking short – especially when you know that your battery might run out. Particularly, when you are on motor-way and may not reach a recharging point for next few hours.

You can leave some of the unnecessary gossips (aur sunao stuff). Keep the conversation brief and relevant and of course avoid taking unnecessary calls.

Turn Off Vibration:

Vibration feature in the mobile phone consumes quite a lot of battery power, therefore, we should try keeping the vibration off unless the mobile phone is on ‘silent’. Vibrating mobile phones also create disturbance during an important meeting. So keep it off unless it is very necessary.

Switch it Off:

Don't assume that I am asking you to switch off your phone off all the day or all the time, but you can keep it switched off when you are out-station and there is no coverage.

Let it Discharge completely before you charge again:

If you want to get the maximum out of your mobile phone’s battery then always let the mobile battery get fully discharge and then turn off the mobile before you charge it. Full charging gives the battery long life time.

Other big recipients will be the worldwide domain registrars and highly specialized experts and lawyers, while the cascading revenues will go to IT and Web support organizations. The public at large will become the real beneficiaries, as a billion new users will come online, millions of new interactive gateways will open and thousands of new global brands will emerge.

Ripple Effect

This will have a global impact and bring a new face to global e-commerce. The study also points out how in countries around the world, new national clubs of overnight billion-dollar domain name owners will emerge, all fueling the new global race.

In contrast to the nickel-and-dime registration fees and fighting over domain names, this mature approach will alter the domain name perceptions for the global business community, as by and large, domain names have been the most grossly overlooked aspect of a name identity, assumed to be only handled by junior programmers and Web designers. The new registration process has built-in controls – gone will be the days when billion-dollar businesses were on their hands and knees when some kid squatted on their domain names for peanuts and had the capability to pull the corporate strings. In those earlier days, at $70 per domain name, up to a million names per day were being registered. The success was so huge that VeriSign (Nasdaq: VRSN) ended up being sold for $22 billion.

This latest approach allows great ideas to catapult into overnight global-cyber-name-brands of extraordinary proportions, yet the game must be played fairly and with proper registration while accommodating all the trademark issues. However, the businesses will have to deploy smart and professional strategies with a commanding knowledge of global corporate nomenclature and cyber name identity ownership.

According to this study, there is also a huge second layer of applicants, where some 1.1 million businesses representing the big commercial interests from all the countries of the world that will enter this arena. These organizations basically have no choice but to fully embrace the new model, as the performances of their current and existing name identities are already seriously questionable. There are also the governments and municipal bodies all over the world and thousands of trade associations who would like to form exclusive consortia to create cyber-umbrella-identities.

The study further refers to the last layers of entrepreneurial players from all over the world who will enter this arena to quickly become the next eBay, Google, YouTube or Dell using the mix of multimedia forces and online visibility. The study confirms the role of the dot-com suffix as still being the king, and will remain so until the new system is fully entrenched over the next five to 10 years.

All told, the new registration formula brings a serious high-class tone to the process; the sophistication of creating, building and playing on this new name economy will be awesome. Only the best-designed and properly crafted, highly logical identities that will pass the stringent test of the Five Star Standard will have the chance to join the real race, while the others will merely be the spectators. Business naming is a very tactical, black-and-white exercise and is not to be confused with a typical, logo-driven agency project.

Give Them a Break

The study also challenges the high non-refundable costs as being out of reach for nonprofits, public organizations, developing countries, educational services and religious and community organizations and suggests that the huge economies of scale should bring it to a moderate fee, comparable to a regular highly automated and streamlined current global trademark filing fee structure.

The approval system should be based on globally recognized intellectual property and trademark guidelines, making the process highly transparent and easy to decipher with efficient, quick and cost-effective outcomes. The entire program must quickly reach critical mass to make its global impact and benefit the global users online. The study offers configurations of various national consortium registration models and corporate and public bidding routines.

With launch scheduled for as early as 2012, the window of opportunity is already very tight. It requires tactical game planning for businesses to fully sort out preplanned and desired identities and the posture to go after them against a global competition. Corporations have already started serious discussions on how to capture the most creative and powerful solutions. Initially, the early domain names took a decade to spread around the globe, but today they are entrenched in every walk of life.

Like a tsunami, they will all descend at once from all over the globe in this new race. The global businesses and the public both are gathering fast at the starting lines, getting set and ready to sprint.
