Answers on a postcard, please

4 February, 2011

Like Chris Blattman, I've just been 'interviewed' by email by a journalist writing a series of articles about poverty.  She wanted, by return, some answers to some pretty preposterous questions.  My answers are below. I'm sure readers of this blog would have interesting answers, so please put them in the comments below.

1. It is realistic to think that poverty can one day end?

It depends what you mean by "poverty".  I certainly believe that it is feasible in the near future for everyone to have enough to eat; to have access to clean water; to have access to basic healthcare which prevents them from dying from easily preventable and treatable diseases; to have shelter and sanitation; for every child to go to school and for mothers to face low risks of dying in childbirth.

But poverty is also a relative idea; there will always be people who need help.  We should plan to have permanent, well governed mechanisms of global solidarity so that those who are fortunate, wherever they may be in the world, can support those who are less fortunate, whoever they may be.  We may hope that particular individuals will need help only temporarily, but we need permanent systems to ensure that they get it.

2. What are the best global solutions?

The countries of the rich world could do much more to create the conditions for poor countries to accelerate development. For example they could, at very little cost to themselves (indeed, with some benefit) improve trade policies and reduce agricultural subsidies to enable poor countries to trade their way out of poverty; permit greater migration from developing countries, so that the benefits of globalisation are more widely shared; adjust government-created intellectual property rights to enable poor countries to share the benefits of new technologies; close tax havens and clamp down on corruption, tax evasion and tax avoidance by multinational companies; open up detailed information about financial flows including aid, payments for extractive industries, defence spending, and climate change, so that citizens of developing countries can ensure that those resources are not squandered; create markets for environmental assets, especially by setting global carbon emissions ceilings and agreeing to equal per capita allocations, so that the rich world pays a fair price for their use of more than their fair share of the world's natural resources; and reduce exports of small and large arms to the developing word.

As industrialised countries help create the conditions for developing countries to make faster progress, it will be for the people of the developing world to use their own ingenuity and hard work to develop social, economic and political institutions that enable them to make progress in their own way; but it is hard to imagine success that does not involve much greater investment in the rights and status of women.

3. How urgent is it to act?

Twenty five thousand people die each day of preventable and treatable diseases.  If those people were citizens of Europe or America, we would have declared a state of emergency.

4. Do you believe there is hope for the future?

Of course: hope for the future is amply justified by the extraordinary progress which developing countries are making.  The last fifty years has seen the fastest progress in human history on reducing poverty and improving living standards, from reducing malnutrition to providing access to clean water.

Warid Gets Irfan Chaudry Back as CTO

Posted: 03 Feb 2011 05:16 AM PST

Warid Gets Irfan Chaudry Back as CTO is a post from: ProPakistani

Warid Telecom has re-hired Mr. Irfan Chaudry as Chief Technical Officer of the company, after a gap of four month, we have confirmed with multiple sources close to the situation.

Mr. Chaudry had resigned from CTO's office at Warid in September 2010, reportedly, due to differences with higher management.

However, recent reshuffle in Warid's Management made a way for him to get back to his lost seat. Mr. Chaudry will also take care of IT department as interim head.

Mr.Chaudry has been with Warid for last six year.

Telecom experts are taking the re-entry of Irfan Chaudry as a sign that Warid is no longer looking for a buyer, at least for another year or so.

This opinion is supported by a fact that Warid employees got up to 15 percent increment in salaries. This announcement was made by Mr. Zouhair A. Khaliq, Executive Director, Warid, in front of managers and senior management at Royal Palm Country Club, Lahore yesterday in a townhall meeting, told us a source in the company.

Reportedly, Mr. Khaliq held a similar ceremony in Karachi today, where managers and higher management from south region were present.

According to our source, during the Lahore session, when someone asked about the possible merger of Warid, Mr. Khaliq replied "If Warid's merger was supposed to happen, it would have happened by now".

Mr. Khaliq also announced that company has no plans for any head cut in near future.

If your Website Reproduces Content from Other Websites Then You are in Trouble

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 11:33 PM PST

If your Website Reproduces Content from Other Websites Then You are in Trouble is a post from: ProPakistani

We recently wrote on how to report to Google the copyright infringements for those who think their genuinely written unique content is aggressively copied over the web.

Well, to all those legitimate bloggers/ webmaster you may not need to report websites for copy/pasting any further.

Actually here's a good news, at same time a death warrant for those scamper bloggers who copy/paste content on their website, and the news is:

"we (Google) are evaluating multiple changes that should help drive spam levels even lower, including one change that primarily affects sites that copy others' content and sites with low levels of original content.", Matt Cutts, Head of SPAM at Google

Via: mattcutts.com

In simple words, all those websites which reproduce content from elsewhere on the web will be ranked lower or will be marked as SPAM and won't appear in search engines at all.

So if you are working on a blog idea, which will reproduce content from other websites, straight away forget it. If you are already doing this then start looking for other ways to earn money.

Maxthon 3 Review – Part 2

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 11:19 PM PST

Maxthon 3 Review – Part 2 is a post from: ProPakistani

This is a Guest Post by Fawad Hassan, who is a professional web developer, intermediate designer, and amature photographer. He currently works as Software Engineer for Ufone. He runs a web development blog iFadey and also teach web technologies.

Few months ago I wrote an article as a guest writer about Maxthon 3. I am writing another review because there are UI changes and many new features added in the latest release.

I am not giving any introduction of Maxthon 3 here because it was already given in the previous article.

Revised UI

There are minor changes in the UI as shown below.

maxthon 3 ui thumb Maxthon 3 Review Part 2

The first thing you may have noticed is that the Page Menu is gone (Button No. 7 in this image). All the options under Page Menu are now moved to under Menu (blue button on top-right). Let’s take a look at the new buttons added in the UI.

1) Feed Reader This button opens Maxthon’s builtin feed reader.

2) Online Notepad It’s actually cloud based notepad which save your notes on Maxthon servers which can be retrieved from any PC having Maxthon 3 installed in it. This is similar to Online Favorites.

3) Translator You can translate complete webpage or selected text directly from Maxthon.

4) Mute Sound You can mute sounds on the opened webpage using this button.

Remember that all the buttons (Feed Reader, Online Notepad, Translator) on favorite bar can also be accessed from Menu > Tools. I always hide the favorites bar because I prefer to keep the UI simple and clean.

Tip: You can show/hide favorites bar by pressing Ctrl + B.

Private Browsing

This mode allows you to browse the web privately without leaving the traces (cookies, history, and cache files) behind. It automatically clears all the traces when you close the browser running in Private Mode. To run the browser in Private Mode, click Menu > New Private Window. When browser is running in Private Mode, it shows a shield icon on User Profile button as shown below.

Tip: You can clear the traces manually by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Del.

Workspace

Imagine you have two or more Gmail accounts and want to login all of them at a time using single browser. Maxthon made that possible for you by introducing a concept called Workspace.

Open Maxthon 3 and login using your Gmail/Yahoo/Live account. Then click Menu > New Workspace Window and open gmail.com again. You will see a gmail login page instead of logging in automatically with currently signed in email id. Here you can signin using a different email id.

Split Screen

One of my favorite feature in new release is Split Screen. This mode divides the screen in two halfs and display two webpages at a time. This feature is very nice if you want to compare two web pages. Press F10 to activate/deactivate Split view or goto Menu > View > Split Screen.

You can move tabs from one half to the other and also open new tabs. When you close the Split view, all tabs from the right half will automatically appear in left one.

Online Notepad

Online Notepad is a cloud based text editor in which you can save notes and access them from any PC having Maxthon 3. Remember that you need Maxthon Passport account to save notes online.

Tip: Ctr + G is the shortcut key of Online Notepad.

Feed Reader

Maxthon now includes a built-in Feed Reader. You can access it from Menu > Tools > Feed Reader. Things may change or new features will be added in it because Feed Reader is currently in beta.

More cool features will come in future releases of Maxthon 3. So your Maxthon 3 updated to enjoy these exciting new features :)

Installing Maxthon 3

You can download latest release of Maxthon 3 from this link. The installer size is around 17 MB. Installation process is very quick and completed within few seconds.
